Gemma Lock uses abstraction to explore unconscious themes in the psyche that underpin our connections to nature, the environment, and one another. Painting serves as a means of processing both inner and outer worlds; it allows them to make sense of neurodiversity and the experience of being non-binary. Through abstraction, they find a safe, expressive, and deeply healing language, one that gives them a voice others can connect with. Art provides a platform to engage with personal and collective contexts while also sharing them openly. As a post-menopausal AFAB person, they have often experienced marginalisation and invisibility. Creating art allows them to reclaim presence, visibility, and connection. It is a way for them to take up space in the world authentically and unapologetically.
